Sugar Train Slot Review
Sugar Train is a candy-themed video slot from Eyecon, released in March 2018. It plays on a 5x3 grid with 25 fixed paylines, an RTP of 95.07%, and medium volatility. The standout features are three separate bonus mechanics: a free spins round triggered by gummy bear scatters, a Rainbow Pick scatter bonus, and a randomly triggered Gumball feature. None of them require a bonus buy - all three can fire within a normal session.
Eyecon built Sugar Train as a sweeter companion piece to their existing catalogue of UK-friendly bingo slots. The mechanics are heavier than most casual-looking games suggest. Three distinct bonus paths means more variation session to session, though the 95.07% RTP is a few tenths below the 95.39% you get on Fluffy Favourites.

Theme and Symbols
The setting is a candy world. Lollipops, cupcakes, jelly frogs, chocolate bars, doughnuts, hearts, and jelly babies fill the reels, with chocolate cakes as the highest-paying standard symbol - five of them returns 5,000 coins. The train itself runs along the bottom of the screen, carrying gumballs, and there is a set of traffic lights in the top-right corner that signals the Gumball feature when they flash red.
The wild symbol is the gummy bear. It substitutes for all standard pay symbols and doubles any winning combination it helps complete. It also doubles as the scatter for the free spins round, so landing three or more gummy bears on the reels does two things at once - it contributes to any line win and simultaneously triggers the free games. The rainbow symbol is a separate scatter that triggers the Rainbow Pick.
Visually the game is bright and cheerful without being cluttered. The symbol set is large enough to read clearly on both desktop and mobile displays.
Bonus Features
Free Spins
Three gummy bear scatter symbols anywhere on the reels award 15 free spins. Four gummy bears gives 20 free spins, and five gives 25. During the free games, the wild symbol retains its doubling multiplier on line wins it completes, meaning any win involving a wild pays double throughout the entire feature.
The free spins can retrigger. Each retrigger adds another set of spins - the same 15/20/25 scale applies depending on how many gummy bears land - up to a maximum of 15 retriggers within a single feature. Chaining retriggers during the free games is the main route to the larger wins this game can produce.
Rainbow Pick
The Rainbow Pick activates when three or more rainbow scatter symbols appear anywhere on the reels. Three rainbows gives you 2 picks; four rainbows gives 3 picks; five rainbows gives 4 picks. Each pick reveals a multiplier value worth up to 100x your total bet. All picks are combined for the final payout.
There is no risk element here - every pick pays. The picks are drawn from coloured rainbow sections on screen, and the animation reveals each prize in sequence before totalling the round. A full 4-pick trigger with all selections at the 100x ceiling would return 400x your bet, though that is an extreme outcome. Average picks sit well below the ceiling.
Gumball Feature
The Gumball feature triggers randomly - not from symbol combinations. When the traffic lights in the top-right corner of the screen start flashing, the feature activates. The train deposits new carriages below the reels and a claw mechanism grabs five gumballs from the train, each one revealing a cash prize. The maximum total return from the Gumball feature is 500x your bet, which makes it the highest single-feature ceiling in the game.
Because it triggers randomly rather than through scatter symbols, the Gumball feature can activate on any base game spin. There is no way to predict or influence when it fires - it adds an unpredictable upside to ordinary spins.
Wild Symbol
In the base game, the gummy bear wild appears on all five reels and substitutes for all standard pay symbols. Crucially, it doubles the prize for any line win it completes or extends. On a 25-payline grid it can contribute to several winning lines simultaneously, with each line getting the 2x multiplier. This is the same mechanic Eyecon uses in Fluffy Favourites, where the elephant wild doubles wins in the base game.
How to Play
Sugar Train plays on a fixed 25-payline layout. All paylines are always active. Your total stake per spin is your selected coin value multiplied by 25, so the minimum spin of £0.25 means 1p per payline. The maximum bet of £12.50 puts 50p on each payline.
Wins pay left to right from reel 1. Three matching symbols in a line is the standard requirement. The gummy bear wild can land on any reel and substitutes for everything except the rainbow scatter.
Autoplay is available with a configurable spin count. Stop conditions for balance drops and single win limits can be set before starting. There is no quick spin option. Sound effects are present but there is no background music, which some players prefer for longer sessions.
Mobile Performance
Sugar Train is built in HTML5 and runs in any browser without a download. The large, clearly drawn candy symbols scale well on smaller screens. The traffic light indicator for the Gumball feature remains visible on compact displays. All three bonus features play out cleanly on mobile with the same animation quality as desktop.
There is no dedicated app - you play via your casino's mobile browser. Load times are consistent with other Eyecon titles of the same era.
Sugar Train and the Eyecon Catalogue
Eyecon was acquired by Playtech in 2017 and Sugar Train was released shortly after, in March 2018. It shares design DNA with the studio's bingo-site staples but is structured differently - where Fluffy Favourites centres on the Toybox Pick as its main attraction, Sugar Train distributes its bonus potential across three separate mechanics. That gives it a slightly different session feel even though the core grid format is identical.
Other Eyecon games with a similar candy or casual aesthetic include Frooty Licious and Heart Burst. If you like the pick-em format of the Rainbow Pick, the Toybox Pick in Fluffy Too operates on comparable mechanics with a coin-pusher angle instead.
Sugar Train Xmas is a seasonal variant of this game with the same maths model and identical feature set, repackaged with Christmas-themed visuals. The RTP, volatility, and bonus mechanics are unchanged.
Volatility and Player Suitability
Medium volatility means Sugar Train sits between the steady-drip return of low-volatility slots and the feast-or-famine pattern of high-volatility titles. The base game pays regularly enough to sustain a session while the three bonus features provide the main prize potential. Wins of significance tend to come from free spins retriggers or a strong Gumball activation rather than from base-game combinations.
The bet ceiling of £12.50 per spin positions this as a mid-stakes game. It is not suited to high-roller play in the way that games with higher maximum bets are, but the medium volatility profile means bankroll burns are less severe than on high-volatility alternatives. For players who enjoy pick-em features and free spins without committing to extended dry spells, the risk profile is reasonable.
The 95.07% RTP is slightly below the UK market average of around 95-96%, and lower than most other Eyecon titles. It is not enough to materially affect short sessions, but over thousands of spins the difference from a higher-RTP alternative compounds.
Verdict
Sugar Train delivers more mechanical variety than its casual sweet-shop appearance suggests. Three separate bonus routes - free spins, Rainbow Pick, and the randomly triggered Gumball feature - give the game texture that single-feature slots lack. The wild doubling multiplier adds value in both the base game and the free spins round.
The 95.07% RTP is the main limitation. It sits below Fluffy Favourites (95.39%) and below the broader Eyecon portfolio average. For casual sessions on a modest stake, that difference is marginal. For extended play, it matters.
If you want more Eyecon content at better value, Irish Luck runs at 96.06% RTP with a similar volatility profile. Sugar Train is a solid, well-structured game - the three-feature setup is genuinely distinctive within Eyecon's range - but the RTP puts a ceiling on what it can return over the long run. Play it for the Gumball feature; that random trigger adds something most pick-em slots do not have.
