Baccarat is a classic card game from Microgaming. It runs on eight decks, follows standard punto banco rules, and gives you three core bets to work with - Player, Banker, or Tie. If you have played baccarat anywhere before, you will feel at home immediately.
How Baccarat Works
Each round starts with two cards dealt to the Player hand and two to the Banker hand. Face cards and tens count as zero. Aces count as one. All other cards carry their face value. If a total exceeds nine, only the right-hand digit counts - so a 7 and an 8 total 15, which becomes 5.
The hand closest to 9 wins. If both hands match, and you bet on Tie, you collect. If you backed Player or Banker on a tie round, your stake is returned.
The Third Card Rule
Neither hand draws a third card automatically. Specific rules govern when a third card is dealt, and these happen automatically in the game - you do not need to make that decision yourself.
For the Player hand: if the total is 0-5, the Player draws a third card. On 6 or 7, the Player stands. On 8 or 9 (a natural), no further cards are drawn for either side.
For the Banker hand: drawing depends on the Banker's total and, if the Player drew, what that third card was. On 0-2, the Banker always draws. On 7, the Banker always stands. On 3-6, drawing depends on the Player's third card according to a fixed table. Again, all of this happens automatically.
Bet Types and House Edge
There are three bets available in this Microgaming version:
- Banker bet - pays even money minus a 5% commission on wins. House edge: 1.06%. This is the lowest-edge bet in the game.
- Player bet - pays even money, no commission. House edge: 1.24%.
- Tie bet - pays 8:1. House edge: 14.36%. This is a side bet, not a main strategy.
The Banker bet is statistically the strongest option in standard baccarat across a long session. The 5% commission is why the Banker pays slightly less than even, but even accounting for it, the Banker wins more often than the Player over time.
Strategy
Baccarat is largely a game of chance - card draws follow fixed rules, so there is no decision-making mid-hand. Strategy comes down to which bet you choose and how you manage your bankroll.
Stick with Banker. With a house edge of 1.06%, it is the closest thing to a coin flip you will find at a casino table. Over hundreds of rounds, backing Banker consistently gives you the best chance of keeping your balance steady.
Avoid the Tie bet for regular play. The 8:1 payout looks attractive, but a 14.36% house edge means Tie bets drain a bankroll quickly. An occasional flutter is fine, but building a session around Tie is poor value.
Ignore scorecards and pattern-chasing. Baccarat results are independent each round. Streaks on a scorecard do not predict the next outcome. Each hand is fresh.
Set a session limit. Because the pace of play is fast and the bet amounts can climb, deciding a stop point before you start is sensible. A 20-unit loss limit keeps a bad run from becoming a very bad run.
